Arts and Crafts Electric Boogaloo

I've been helping at the Price Science Museum here in Utah for almost a month now, and during that time I learned that the museum has these little plaster models that they give out for free. A few weeks ago I got two of these plaster models that were based off of the claws of two different dinosaur species and painted them as a small arts and crafts project. Which I blogged about previously.

Well earlier this week I got the other three plaster models they give out as a way to complete the collection, and to give myself another little arts and crafts project.

Here are the three models after I finished painting them:

This first model is based off of a number of dolls that archeologists have found in the area. These dolls were made by a tribe of Native Americans that used to live in this area, and some of them could apparently get very elaborate and detailed. The museum even displays some of the real things in their archeology section.

This second model is based off of a fossilized Trilobite. Trilobites were aquatic arthropods who first appeared in the fossil record long before the dinosaurs. And their fossilized shells have become a fairly iconic symbol in the Paleontology community.

This final model is simply based off of a dinosaur egg. I wound up painting it green with purple stripes because I thought it would be a little funny to give it an Easter egg like look.

SVP Part 3

The last big event of the SVP conference was the opportunity to pay a visit to the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden. We weren't able to visit after hours this time, but we were able to get in absolutely free which was real nice. I can't speak on how highly regarded this particular zoo is, but I certainly enjoyed it. It had most of the basic attractions you'd expect from a zoo, but it also had a building where you could up close and personal with exotic birds, a bug building, a reptile house, and a building dedicated to housing nocturnal animals. It was very fun to visit. So this is what happens when you try to feed the animals. :)

What is That?

 I am only being rhetorical when I ask that. I know exactly what this is, a Tesla Cybertruck. Tesla's new line of electric cars that I guess are supposed to look flashy and futuristic. And while I may not be a car guy, even I can tell that if this design is supposed to be the future of cars, then the future truly is a dark and scary place. In all serious though. This was only my second time seeing a car like this in St. Louis. So they clearly are not catching on to much here in the mid-west. Although that does raise the question of if they are catching on more so in other parts of the country? And if so then where? Just so I know where I should avoid :)

Moab Trip

 Today I did a little exploring around the state of Utah and paid a visit to the city of Moab. From what I saw Moab seems to be more of a tourist destination in Utah, since it is near a lot of popular hiking/biking trails, as well as a few famous rock formations such as the Red Rock Formations. I didn't do any of that during my trip, but what I did do was visit a couple of interesting looking locations that caught my eye when I looked up Moab in the first place. The first was a location called Moab Giants. It is basically a Dinosaur themed park that you can visit and walk around for the day. The most famous part of Moab Giants is their Dinosaur Walk, which is a short circular trail that has life sized dinosaur statues dotting the full length of the trail. Most of the statues are of dinosaurs that used to live in Utah, so you get to see first hand just what kinds of critters used to live in the area back in the day.
